ซอยอารีย์ปี 2540 วิกฤตการเงินต้มยำกุ้งทำให้หลายครอบครัวสูญเสียสถานะทางสังคมที่เคยมี ในขณะที่อาคารสำนักงานใหญ่ธนาคารกสิกรไทยที่อีกฝั่งหนึ่งของถนนก็จอแจไปด้วยผู้คนที่ไขว่คว้าหาทางออกจากวิกฤตการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น หนึ่งปีต่อมา ธนาคารสร้างสะพานลอยสามเหลี่ยมข้ามมาฝั่งอารีย์ เป็นดั่งความหวังด้านการเงินที่จะกลับงอกเงยอีกครั้ง
The ‘Tom Yum Goong Financial Crisis’ in 1997 changed the stability of many well-to-do families in Ari. At that time, the Kasikorn Bank headquarters on the other side of the street was crowded with people trying to find their way through the financial mess. ปกติขับรถผ่านตลอด มันคนละความรู้สึกกันเลยนะ
มันทำให้เราเห็นอะไรที่ไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อน

พนักงานธนาคาร:
จิ๊บ รับแทนพี่หน่อย พี่ติดลูกค้าอยู่
ผมเข้าใจดีครับ ลูกค้าหลายคนกำลังลำบาก ชีวิตเปลี่ยนไปจากเดิม
ลูกหนี้:
ผมคิดอยู่แล้วเชียว มันคงเป็นไปไม่ได้ที่เราจะรุ่งเรืองแบบนี้ไปตลอด
ไม่น่าไปหลงเชื่อเลยว่ายุคเสือตัวที่ห้าแห่งเอเชียจะมาถึงจริง
พนักงานธนาคาร:
แต่ก่อนหน้านี้เงินสะพัดเต็มประเทศ
ไม่แปลกหรอกครับที่เราจะมองอะไรๆ ในแง่ดี
ลูกหนี้:
เพื่อนผมเคยดื่มไวน์กันขวดละหมื่นกว่าบาท ตีกอล์ฟ ซื้อรถซื้อรากัน
ตอนนี้แม้แต่ครกก็ยังต้องเอาไปจำนำ
ต้องเอาข้าวของในบ้านไปเปิดท้ายขายของ
พนักงานธนาคาร:
ผมคิดอย่างนี้นะครับ ตอนนี้เราอาจจะมองไม่เห็นทางออก
ไม่เห็นแสงปลายอุโมงค์ แต่อีกหน่อยเราอาจจะมองเห็นก็ได้
ลูกหนี้:
ธุรกิจผมล้ม ใบโฉนดไม่ต่างจากกระดาษเปล่า
เมียโดนเลออฟท์จากบริษัท ผมทะเลาะกับเมียทุกวัน
ต้องเอาลูกออกจากโรงเรียนเอกชน
ผมมองไม่เห็นเลยว่าจะมีความหวังยังไงได้
พนักงานธนาคาร:
งั้นมีความเชื่อได้ไหมครับ เชื่อว่ามันจะดีขึ้น
ผมว่ามนุษย์เรา ถ้าไม่อยู่ด้วยความหวัง ก็ต้องอยู่ด้วยความเชื่อนะครับ
ลูกหนี้:
ผมคงต้องถูกฟ้องล้มละลายใช่ไหม
พนักงานธนาคาร:
ครับ คงต้องบอกตามตรงว่าจะเป็นแบบนั้น
แต่มันไม่ใช่สถานะของคุณตลอดไปหรอกครับ
ขอปลดสถานะบุคคลล้มละลายได้ ถ้าทุกอย่างดีขึ้นแล้ว
ลูกหนี้:
แล้วคุณว่ามันจะดีขึ้นไหม คุณเชื่อไหม
พนักงานธนาคาร:
เชื่อสิครับ ที่เป็นแบบนี้เพราะเราวางแผนผิดพลาด
แต่เราได้เรียนรู้แล้ว ผมเชื่อว่าหลังจากนี้มันจะต้องดีขึ้น
อย่างน้อยเราก็จะไม่ผิดพลาดซ้ำเดิมอีก แต่มันคงต้องใช้เวลา
มันคงไม่ดีขึ้นในวันพรุ่งนี้ แต่อีกปี สองปี สามปี ผมว่ามันต้องดีขึ้นแน่
ลูกหนี้:
ตอนนี้คุณยังมีงานทำเลยมองโลกในแง่บวกเกินไปหรือเปล่า
พนักงานธนาคาร:
บอกตามตรงนะครับ ผมก็เป็นแค่พนักงานบริษัท
ผมเองก็กลัวจะโดนเลย์ออฟท์เหมือนกัน
ธนาคารเองก็เจ๊งไปหลายแห่งแล้วนะครับ
ผมต้องคุยกับคนมากมายทุกวัน ทั้งที่ผมเองก็กลัวเหมือนกัน
แต่ผมแค่หวังว่าหลังผมวางสายจากใคร หรือเวลาที่มีคนมาหา
หลังจากคุณเดินออกไปจากเก้าอี้ตัวนี้ คุณจะไม่เลือกที่จะด่วนจากไปคนเดียว
(เสียงโทรศัพท์ดัง)จิ๊บ รบกวนรับแทนพี่อีกรอบ
มีหลายคนเลยนะครับที่ผมได้ข่าวว่าจากไปแล้ว หลังจากมาคุยกับผม
หรือหลังจากไปนั่งคิดสองสามวัน บางคนเลือกจากไปก่อนที่จะมาคุยกันด้วยซ้ำ
มันหดหู่มากนะครับ อาชีพผมเหมือนต้องดับฝัน ดับความหวังคนอื่น
ผมเลยอยากเปลี่ยนเป็นคนที่ช่วยให้มีความหวังแทน
คิดถึงคนข้างๆ ไว้เถอะครับ คุณยังมีภรรยา มีลูก
อย่าให้พวกเขาต้องผ่านช่วงเวลานี้ไปแบบไม่มีคุณเลย
ลูกหนี้:
(นิ่งคิด) มันไม่ง่ายหรอกนะที่คุณจะต้องยอมรับว่าเงินที่เคยหามาได้ง่ายๆ
ความสำเร็จที่เคยมี หายวับไปเหมือนฟองสบู่แตก
แล้วคุณก็ไม่รู้ว่าจะกลับไปสู่จุดนั้นอีกได้ยังไง อาจกลับไปไม่ได้อีกเลย
พนักงานธนาคาร:
คิดซะว่าคุณต้องผ่านจุดนี้เพื่อไปสู่บางอย่างนะครับ
เหมือนสิ่งก่อสร้างพวกนี้ วันหนึ่งมันก็จะเสร็จแล้วก็ใช้งานได้
ลูกหนี้:
แต่ตึกบางตึกก็อาจจะถูกทิ้งร้างไปตลอดเลยก็ได้นะ
พนักงานธนาคาร:
นั่นก็จริงครับ ผมเองก็ไม่รู้อนาคตเหมือนกัน
แต่ผมแค่ต้องมีหวัง

Bank employees:

but we have learned I believe it will get better after this.
At least we won’t make the same mistake again. but it will take time
It won’t get better tomorrow, but in another year, two years, three years, I think it’s going to get better.
Debtor:
Are you being too optimistic now that you still have a job?
Bank employees:

I’m also afraid of being laid off as well.
